Closure
Threat to RAF Kinloss - 21st July 2004
Following an
announcement by the Secretary of State for Defence on the
21st July 2004 there are to be staffing and aircraft reductions
at RAF Kinloss. This will include the lose of up to five
Nimrod aircraft and the reduction of a number of aircrew,
associated ground engineers and support staff. Additionally
there is also the threat of closure of the RAF base hanging
in the balance awaiting a Government decision following
a review by the House of Commons Defence Committee.
The reduction
of aircraft and personnel at RAF Kinloss will have an impact
on the local economy but nothing compared to the total loss
of the base. If RAF Kinloss were to close that would mean
the loss of several hundred local civilian jobs and a financial
loss to the local economy of around £50 Million a
year. The loss of this airbase would devastate the local
community - it is therefore imperative that you have your
say,
The Local Westminster
MP, Angus Robertson, has started to raise a petition against
the cuts stating that "thousands of jobs and tens of
millions of pounds could be lost to Moray and the North
of Scotland" he goes on to refer to the "...the
potentially devastating effect to the local health system,
schools and Moray College which are significantly staffed
and attended by service partners and children".
